Sports Nutrition Supplements and Vital Information
to Stay Strong
There are a variety of sports nutrition supplements
available for athletes seeking to improve their
performance--whether it's increasing endurance
or building muscle. Nutritional supplements are
intended to provide vitamins, minerals, amino
acids, fiber, and/or fatty acids that are not
sufficiently present in a person's diet. Supplements
for sports nutrition, therefore, offer athletes
the nutrients that they require in greater quantities
in order to do well at their sport. These supplements
can help build muscle, enhance strength, boost
metabolism, facilitate recovery, increase energy
and endurance, and generally provide the vitamins
and minerals the body needs to sustain intense
energy output.
While nutritional supplements are usually natural
and intended to help the body achieve balance,
there is a risk that people taking the supplement
can overdose, especially with sports formulas
or supplements that are intended for weight loss
or other extremes. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration
monitors all supplements and publishes warnings
about products that could put a consumer at risk.
As with any product, it is important to be wary
of supplements that are advertised as a cure-all
or allowing for a miraculous event. Consult with
a doctor or certified nutritionist before taking
any kind of nutritional formula.
That said, too much of anything--even a good
thing--can be harmful. Most supplements are perfectly
fine and even beneficial for your body. It is
the abuse of them that makes them deleterious.
Remember that the best way to achieve your desired
fitness results is to eat the right foods. Most
of the nutrition you need can be obtained by a
balance diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables.
Nutritional supplements, however, may be necessary
to sustain your energy output or to help strengthen
a system in your body. Be safe and use common
sense.
