Buying Protein Supplements - Do Your Research
First
Should you buy protein supplements? Though it
is not a fancy new supplement with a crazy, extreme
name, protein supplements are probably the most
important supplement that an athlete or bodybuilder
can buy. Those who buy protein supplements are
looking to add lean muscle mass to their body
and increase their overall strength.
What Is The Purpose Of Protein?
Whether you have heard this before or not, it
deserves to be said again, protein is one of the
building blocks of muscle. If you want to build
muscle and at the same time lose fat, you need
to have your protein, and sometimes in greater
quantities than what is in your normal diet.
When you exercise you break down your muscles.
The muscles are then rebuilt, stronger and larger,
by the body which uses proteins as the energy
source. It does not use fat or carbohydrates for
this process. This is the reason for the pedestal
in which protein is placed upon by bodybuilders
and athletes.
What Are Protein Supplements?
Protein supplements generally come in the form
of a powder to be mixed with some sort of liquid.
Protein bars have also become popular because
of their convenience, though they are generally
more expensive than the protein shakes.
Protein supplements also come with varying degrees
of protein as well as differing amounts of fat
and carbohydrates. Those who are looking to lose
weight are better off going with a protein supplement
that is pure protein, or at least more than 50
percent protein.
Another reason for the popularity of protein
supplements is the degree of convenience they
offer. You probably don't have the time to spend
cooking broccoli and chicken breasts several times
per day. A protein bar can be opened and eaten
just like a candy bar, and a protein shake can
be made in a couple of minutes.
Do Protein Supplements Have Side Effects?
Protein has no side effects unless taken to the
extreme. If you are looking to gain muscle mass
or have an intense workout regimen, it is recommended
that you shot for one gram of protein per pound
of bodyweight. The normal amount of protein in
a diet is about .4 grams of protein per pound
of bodyweight.
